I agree that the fact that Outlook is not installed causes the install to say 'I don't complete' when in reality it is successful is quite dumb.
BJ they won't pull back the SP. As a result that "lying down' you think we are doing? Sorry but.... let's just say I will promise you this that I am making it crystal clear that never again should a service pack be quite so ignorant of the fact that you gave us the whistles and bells and we decided to play with them.
Why SBS sp1? Well the Windows sp1 part fixes a lot of backup issues.
If you have Standard, if you have kept up with Windows/Sharepoint/Exchange/Pop patches and what not, it does make it harder for me to argue to patch with SP1 if you are not a Premium customer.
IIS6 is so rock solid, they made it too good.
But I would not be the patchaholic I am if I didn't urge you to sooner or later ensure that you are on Windows 2003 sp1 [and you then must put on SBS sp1 to refix a few things that Windows 2003 sp1 breaks.
There are more dcom and other more XP sp2ish security tightening that ...frankly.... sooner versus later ... you'll want this service pack.
BJ flat out they won't pull it back... and I don't think you understand how we've tried to ensure that we've given you as many guidelines as we can to ensure you have the best patching experience you can.
Flat out BJ Service packs in SBSland have ALWAYS been messy and icky. I've Service packed SBS 4.0, 4.0a, 4.5, 2000 and 2003. I've hated it every time.
BJ... I promise you this... I will do everything in my power that I can to make sure that the next time we do service packs in SBSland it will be easier. That's all I can do. In the meantime, the page we've put together up at www.smallbizserver.net represents what we did 'lying down' as you call it to help.

I followed the instructions and everything was going fine.
When I try to install SBS SP1 it says there was an error and to check the setup.log file; it even offers to open it for me.
The problem is there is no error, the log lists all the components and everything says:
Version: ... Installation Status: Success Error Message: NA
So, anyone want to guess what the error is?
This is absurd. How could Microsoft have released something like this? I understand that they have never pulled a service pack, but maybe it's time they started. People have work to do and do not have time to play games with this kind of silliness. Here this poor guy just wanted to do an update and he will probably have to spend his entire weekend reconstructing a domain, email, users etc. Give me a break. This is totally unacceptable and I can't believe this SBS MVP community is taking it lying down. The "you only see the problems" argument is wearing extremely thin when the installation status says: success.
On a lighter note, I have installed SP1 for Exchange and nothing else. Why would I need SBS SP1 anyway?
