Re: Routing faxes from faxcard on client to Sharepoint library on SBS 2003 server

Many thanks for your advice. The scenario I have is a server in a
separate locked server room with no phone lines. Hence, it's a physical
requirement to install a fax card on a client machine - wiring does not
exist to get a phone line into the server room. I expect this scenario
is common for SBS users, and you might want to let SBS product planning
people know so that client-based fax card scenarios can be incorporated
in a subsequent SBS version or service pack.

I tried to use the Fax Routing Extension API but unless I am mistaken,
it appears that I would need to write my own code to route faxes to a
Sharepoint document library, which I am not skilled to do (and would
imagine that most SBS admins are not either).

You're right that by default the fax service logs on in the client
machine using the built in system account. It appears that this
account cannot be given write privileges to the Sharepoint document
library, so it cannot route the fax. While I don't have an explicit
error message that says this, I'm pretty sure that's what is going on.

I have attempted to change the user that the client fax service logs on
as. I changed it to domain\administrator, then made sure that
administrator has write privileges to the sharepoint folder (which it
has by default). This creates a problem with the client fax service
however. It won't restart on the client machine, and if I get it to
restart by rebooting the client machine, then I cannot administer the
fax service at all and cannot set up a routing method. Can you suggest
any other approach to deal with the permission issue?

Kind regards and thanks

.
