First, despite the delay does the server eventually allow you to logon?

There are two aspects to DHCP, the DHCP Server and Client. For your NIC to
be getting a 169.254.X.X it would seem you have changed it to be a DHCP
client, this is not correct.

I believe we may be best off if you rename the external NIC to 'external',
do you know how to do this?

External should be configured for an IP appropriate for the router.
The 'Server Local Area Connection' NIC should be configured to the last
static IP which worked.

All _client_ PC's will get their IP info via DHCP from the server.
