Re: Newbie has two SBS2003 issues

Hi Ricky,

SUS may have downloaded WS2k3 SP1, and it may be approved because 'auto
approve updates' is configured. This by itself isn't a problem, allthough I
personally prefer to manually approve updates in SUS.

Whether your servers or even workstations see these updates in SUS would
depend on the specifics of your SUS configuration. Generally, it's accepted
good practice that SUS policy would be applied differently for servers
versus workstations, in that updates to servers would be manually applied so
that the restart process could be controlled.

There was a brief period a few weeks ago where an SBS 2k3 server, configured
to automatically download *and* apply updates, may have installed Windows
Server 2k3 SP1. But if that was the case, it would have broken some
functionality on your SBS - I think you'd have noticed. A windows 2k3 member
server may have the SP1 applied, that shouldn't be a problem.

So far as the backups go, you'd have to inspect the backup logs themselves
to see what's going on (or, post one here). Generally, if you use SBSbackup
(which I don't think you are), the troubleshooting follows a fairly
predictable path, as does disaster recovery, as the backup configuration is
known.

If you use the native NTbackup, then the configuration cannot be known
unless you spell it out in some detail. BTW, SBSbackup doesn't need to
complete prior to the maintenance tasks starting .... the VSS technology
enables a type of 'snapshot', which completes in a very few minutes - and
this 'snapshot' is what is backed up.
