Hello Don,
Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.
Also, many thanks for Dean's great input.
According to your description, I understand that you have some questions
about the installation of SQL SP4 in SBS 2003 Premium. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please don't hesitate to let me know.
First of all, please refer to the following information:
SBS SharePoint with SQL
SBS Intranet setup always installs SharePoint with MSDE regardless of
whether SQL server is being installed or not.
If SharePoint Setup detects another instance of SQL 7.0/2000 or MSDE
7.0/2000 during the setup, it will install the sixteenth instance of MSDE
alongside the initial instance. In these cases, SBS setup behaves no
differently than the clean install.
To install SBS SP1
By default, SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000 Service Pack 4 is
automatically applied to the instances of SQL Server 2000 MSDE that were
installed during Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup, including the
Monitoring (SBSMONITORING) MSDE instance and the SharePoint Services
(SHAREPOINT) WMSDE instance.
Additionally, if you have Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium
Edition, and you have installed ISA 2004, MSDE Service Pack 4 is
automatically applied to the ISA Server 2004 Firewall (MSFW) MSDE instance.
You will also need to install SQL Server Service Pack 4 if you are running
instances of SQL Server 2000.
Backup SQL database
SQL Server data can be backed up in simple recovery mode using the Volume
Shadow Copy service.
In reference to your previous question, the other instances of SQL Server
2000 need to be manually applied to SQL Server 2000 SP4. You can use
Enterprise Manager to create a database backup.
I hope this helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to be of further assistance.
Best regards,
Nathan Liu (MSFT)
