Re: Guidance with SBS SP1

Do you have a full domain now? If you do I wouldn't reinstall from scratch.

It sounds sort of like you had a CPU peg issue and I'd advise you to
call product support services to see what's up with that.

Hello

I have SBS 2003 Premium, however, I do not have all of the Premium Technologies installed - I do have Outlook and Frontpage 2003 installed. I don't really have a need for SQL Server 2000 and I had a lot of problems trying to implement ISA Server 2000 18 months ago when I set up my server.

This past Friday night, I attempted to install SBS SP1 (including the prerequisites - some of which were already installed). Everything "appeared" to install correctly until the last step - the SBS SP1 install.

Unfortunately, I only read the instructions from Microsoft and I did not consult with the Newsgroups and more importantly the installation notes on www.smallbizserver.net (note: thanks for the info!!).

Here's what happened:

When I ran the SBS SP1 installation on Friday night, I made sure I stopped the Symantec Antivirus and the Microsoft (beta) Spyware software. I should mention, I forgot to stop the Symantec for Microsoft Exchange component of the antivirus software. Nor did I know to check to make sure certain services were running under the proper "user/system" account. I was signed on with my "renamed" administrator account, so I know I had the correct privileges.

Anyhow, the SBS SP1 installer's progress indicator kept going all the way across and then started over. It did this at least 4 times over a period of a little more than 2 hours. I finally opened Task Manager to see if setup.exe was actually doing anything and the process was using "00" CPU time. So.... I checked back a little while later, same thing. I finally decided to end the process and restart my server.

When it came back up, I attempted the install again. Same thing. I waited several hours and nothing seemed to be happening. After ending the process, both times, the installer displayed the error log and everything in the list (which I'm sorry to say I don't have and I can't remember the last item in the list) and they all said "success".

After restarting a 2nd time I checked to see what was working. The "companyweb" and Sharepoint features stopped working, as well as some of the SBS 2003 wizards (like monitoring and reporting - I couldn't even go in to turn off the email warnings I was receiving). Very frustrating! Needless to say, my SP1 experience was very poor - again, if I had the information from www.smallbizserver.net, perhaps things would have gone differently.

Anyhow, I decided to restore my server from backup (which I had NEVER done before). I figured if I could at least get the server back to where it was before I started I'd be satisfied for the time being. This is where the REAL nightmare began, but I won't go into all that. After spending nearly 7 hours on Saturday I finally had everything restored and working properly again (pre SBS SP1, post Windows Server 2003 SP1).

So.... if you've made it this far, thanks for reading and putting up with me. Here's my goal/question.... My goal is to use ISA Server 2004 to implement stronger security as my business partner travels and regularly uses either VPN or Remote Web Workplace for email access. I don't currently have ISA Server 2004 as my software came with ISA Server 2000, I ordered the SBS Premium Technologies/SBS SP1 upgrade CD - hopefully it includes Windows Server 2003 SP1 and/or SBS SP1 slipstreamed.

At this point, because of the failed SBS SP1 installs and my tinkering, I'm planning a clean install once I receive the CD's. Can I install the OS, all upgrades and/or service packs AND ISA Server 2004 before running all of the wizards and setting up my SBS 2003 domain? OR do I have to set up the domain first and then install ISA Server 2004?

Once I have the upgrade CD's in hand (as a backup plan!), I may feel courageous enough to attempt the SBS SP1 install again, then ISA Server 2004 - following the great advice here in the newsgroups.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!
