RE: Lost local admin credentials

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Wyck,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup. Hi Susan, thanks for your input.

As I know, there is no local Administrator account on a DC so I am confused
with "Local Administrator" you mentioned in the post. Would you please
help me to confirm the following information?

1. Does this issue occur on a SBS 2003 machine or an internal client?
2. If it occurs on an internal client, you may try the following steps to
reset the Local admin password.

1) Log on as domain user with local admin rights.
2) Right click My Computer->Manager->Local Users and
Groups->Users->Administrator
3) Right Administrator user->Set Password

3. If it occurs on the SBS, since there is no local Administrator account
on a DC, do you mean that you lost the password for the
<sbsdomain>\Administrator account?

Hope this information helps. If you have further questions on the issue,
please feel free to let me know.

I look forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Crina Li (MSFT)

| When the local administrators password does not work is there any
alternative
| to a complete recreation of the domain? In an attempt to sort out some
| problems with AD I discovered the local admin credentials don't work. I
can
| run as domain admin in normal mode.
| It looks to me like I'm going to have to reinstall everything, re-create
| the domain, dis-join all the clients (9) and re-join them to the new
domain
| which will have all the same settings as the old one except for all the
SIDs.
| Is this a correct assumption?
