Hi Tony,
Welcome to the SBS newsgroup.
According to your description, it seems that you encountered some issue in
telnet and VPN.
Before we go any further could you tell us that which host you want to run
the telnet and why you want to run the telnet, as we know the port 23 is a
standard port for telnet, other service such SMTP VPN will use different
port other than port 23 also the telnet service will not run by default on
the SBS 2003. For example if you want to telnet SMTP service on the SBS you
need to telnet the port 25. You also mean you can not establish the VPN
connection from the workstation. In order to solve this issue, please help
gather the information below:
1. Could you tell us the workstation is an internal one or remote
one?
2. Could you paste the detailed error message in the event view and
when you connecting the SBS server from the client computer to the
newsgroup?
3. Does it occur to all your workstation or just this one?
4. Could you rerun the CEICW to make sure all the default setting
for ISA and VPN is right, you can refer to the following KB article for
detailed steps, after try the steps below test again to see if the issue
can be resolved:
825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763
5. Could you tell us which kinds of software is used to establish
the VPN connection, Windows VPN client software or connection management?
6. Is there any problem if you logon the SBS 2003 via RDP session. (
Remote Desktop Connection)
7. If possible could you try to see if you can establish the VPN
connection between different internal clients?
8. If there is any hardware router installed on the SBS 2003, please
make sure that the required port is opened on the hardware router, here is
the port that need to opened on the hardware router:
TCP 25 This port is used for incoming SMTP traffic. If this port
is not enabled, you will be unable to receive external e-mails.
TCP 110 This port is used for POP3 mail clients. This port should be
opened when the POP3 service is enabled in the SBS 2003 server.
TCP 443 SSL
TCP 444 Companyweb SSL
TCP 4125 Remote Web Workplace
TCP 3389 Terminal services
TCP 1723 PPTP VPN connection
TCP 47 PPTP VPN connection (protocol number 47)
I appreciate your taking the time to perform the tests, if you have any
further issue, please let me know. Please also paste your results as your
earliest convenience, I am here waiting for your updates.
Best regards,
Charles Yang (MSFT)
