To add to Les's excellent comments.
- Before unplugging a USB drive, you really, really want to click the
"Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon in the system tray to do a clean disconnect.
This will tell you either that it's OK to remove it, or that it is not OK.
For example, if the content of the drive is currently being displayed in
Windows Explorer it will tell you that the drive cannot be disconnected, but
you can usually go and open another drive or close Explorer then try again
and it will be OK. If there are open files on the drive the system will also
refuse to allow the disconnection. Disconnecting without this confirmation
is courting disaster. Note that the same holds true for the little USB "key"
flash drives.
- USB 1.1 used to be very problematic and unstable. Firewire and USB 2.0
tend to be a lot more robust, and a well built Firewire or USB 2.0 external
drive should be fast enough to keep up with rather stressful work. But YMMV
and hype is high, so it's best to test under stress (like making a backup to
the drive while the server is working hard with its own hard disks).
- I found that one potential problem with them is that the drive inside is
still basically a regular IDE drive, which is subject to heat and wear and
might not be as quiet as you would like, or might in some cases be of the
lowest consumer grade to hold the cost down. Cooling is critical. Some
designs use the enclosure as a heat sink so no fan is needed, but placement
of the drive requires good air flow. If the drive enclosure does use a fan,
be sure to try it in a quiet place before buying. Some of those fans are
real whiners. Also, you might want to go with the drive brand that offers a
5 year warranty rather than a brand that offers 1 or 2 years.
