Exchange starting Search

Hi,

When I try to look at Mailboxes in Exchange Admin, there is a long delay,
and an event is generated by the Search service, which on this SBS2003
system won't start. Mailboxes does open eventually. On another SBS2003
system where the Search service works, Mailboxes opens immediately.

Why does trying to look at Mailboxes start the Search service? Is there any
way to disable this "feature?"
