RE: SBS 2003 Exchange Backups...

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Steve,

Thanks for using SBS newsgroup.

Since you are backing up the exchange data, I would like to confirm that if
you are in the case described in the following KB:

Referencing 820272 Backup Operation Fails When You Back Up Exchange Server
2003 Databases
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=820272

If not, I would collect more information for further troubleshooting:

1.First at all, please make sure your backup device (HP dat72) is on the
(Hardware Compatibility List) HCL. If not, we can't guarantee its
functionality on Windows Server 2003(SBS 2003 is based on the Windows 2003).
To check the HCL, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/

If your device is on the list, please continue to answer the following
question:

2. Check the backup log and post them in the newsgroup.

The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup
User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data'.

The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.
(%sbsprogramdir% = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server)

3. Are there any event logs related to this issue?

Meanwhile, It is recommended to install the following update for VSS which
should be used for Backup:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows
Server 2003
