UPDATE: Tried manually adding the computer to the domain and got the
following:
A domain controller for the domain MyDomain.local could not be contacted.
Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly.
If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information.
Then detail gave this:
Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are
not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received
this information, which has been recorded in the file
D:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain
MyDomain.local:
The error was: "DNS server failure."
(error code 0x0000232A RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MyDomain.local
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS servers used by this computer contain incorrect root hints. This
computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP addresses:
10.0.3.1
- One or more of the following zones contains incorrect delegation:
MyDomain.local
(the root zone)
For information about correcting this problem, click Help.
I followed through the help and tried nslookup as follows:
nslookup
set q=srv
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MyDomain.local
I received a time-out. I then checked my event log on the server and found
the following related events in the noted sections:
System:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10002
Date: 4/17/2005
Time: 10:02:04 PM

Computer: MSIOHCSBS
Description:
Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is:

The user is SYSTEM/NT AUTHORITY, SID=S-1-5-18.

Description:
Dynamic registration or deletion of one or more DNS records associated with
DNS domain ".' failed. These records are used by other computers to locate
this server as a domain controller (if the specified domain is an Active
Directory domain) or as an LDAP server (if the specified domain is an
application partition).
Possible causes of failure include:
- TCP/IP properties of the network connections of this computer contain
wrong IP address(es) of the preferred and alternate DNS servers
- Specified preferred and alternate DNS servers are not running
- DNS server(s) primary for the records to be registered is not running
- Preferred or alternate DNS servers are configured with wrong root hints
- Parent DNS zone contains incorrect delegation to the child zone
authoritative for the DNS records that failed registration
USER ACTION
Fix possible misconfiguration(s) specified above and initiate registration
or deletion of the DNS records by running 'nltest.exe /dsregdns' from the
command prompt or by restarting Net Logon service. Nltest.exe is available
in the Microsoft Windows Server Resource Kit CD.

Description:
The DNS server encountered a packet addressed to itself on IP address
10.0.3.1. The packet is for the DNS name
"_ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.dc._msdcs.MyDomain.local.". The
packet will be discarded. This condition usually indicates a configuration
error.
Check the following areas for possible self-send configuration errors:
1) Forwarders list. (DNS servers should not forward to themselves).
2) Master lists of secondary zones.
3) Notify lists of primary zones.
4) Delegations of subzones. Must not contain NS record for this DNS
server unless subzone is also on this server.
5) Root hints.
Example of self-delegation:
-> This DNS server dns1.example.microsoft.com is the primary for the zone
example.microsoft.com.
-> The example.microsoft.com zone contains a delegation of
bar.example.microsoft.com to dns1.example.microsoft.com,
(bar.example.microsoft.com NS dns1.example.microsoft.com)
-> BUT the bar.example.microsoft.com zone is NOT on this server.
Note, you should make this delegation check (with nslookup or DNS manager)
both on this DNS server and on the server(s) you delegated the subzone to.
It is possible that the delegation was done correctly, but that the primary
DNS for the subzone, has any incorrect NS record pointing back at this
server. If this incorrect NS record is cached at this server, then the
self-send could result. If found, the subzone DNS server admin should
remove the offending NS record.
You can use the DNS server debug logging facility to track down the cause of
this problem.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 50 25 00 00 P%..
Both the events 10002 and 7062 began to appear directly following the server
upgrade from standard to premium edition, and they have repeated 1 to 5
times each day for the 10002 event and many, many times for the 7062 event.
Funny thing is that the 40 clients currently running on this domain are not
having problems of any significance.
Nevertheless, I need to get this fixed now, so that I can add more systems
to my domain. I need a method for recreating the DNS records that should be
in DNS for an SBS 2003 platform.
