Newbie: Replacing Win 2K with WinXP machine

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Please pardon my newbieism- I have a client whose hardware is failing so I
built him a new WinXP Pro machine. His old one runs Windows 2000.

I had a great deal of difficulty trying to name his machine and add it to
the domain. First I gave it a name when I built it. When I delivered it, I
wanted to change the name to agree with their naming conventions. I used My
Computer | Properties | Computer Name (tab) | Computer Description. Then I
clicked the "Change" button on that tab. I also tried the
"http://SERVER01/ConnectComputer"; method. I kept getting errors, supposedly
related to the inability of the machine to find the list of computers. But I
finally succeeded. According to the server, the name of the domain is
"Retail.local". The server tells me that authenticated users are permitted
to add machines. I found that I had to use the administrator account. When
it was finally added after much wrestling the name was wrong, and the login
had some funky stuff (that I can't exactly remember) pre-pended. SO it was
something like "Server01/billk" (the Server01 part might be wrong- could've
been the machine name).

I need to try again, and without too much apparent effort because I think
that this time someone (an expert who doesn't know how to do it himself, most
likely) will be looking over my shoulder while I'm trying to do this. I will
be wearing extra anti-perspirant, but would appreciate any help or
instructions that you real experts can offer.

It's a network of less than 10 machines.

Thanks,

Bill
