Re: Cable and Dynamic DNS Setup

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

The router "block" on pings may be a good idea. IMO, the best way to
configure your server is with the smallest exposure to the web. If you
disable WAN pings, many of the automated "bots" out may have a harder time
finding you since many will start off with a random ping to your WAN IP.
I've found external WAN pings to be less necessary for troubleshooting than
internal pings.

DDNS... the DDNS client software you install on your server or a LAN
workstation calls out (not in) on a regular schedule. It looks at your
current WAN IP and then reports this back to the DDNS provider's service.
If the WAN IP changes, the DDNS provider's DNS nameservers are updated. So,
you shouldn't need to open any "inbound" ports for this software to work.

EMAIL... make sure that thatthe TZO Outbound Mail Relay service is a good
match for the amount and frequency of email you intend to send. I think TZO
accepts port 2525 for mail relay instead of 25.

Optimum Online Filtering Outbound Port 25 (SMTP) To Reduce Spam
http://www.optonline.net/Article/print_article?CID=type%3Dreg%26channel%3D68%26article%3D11950711

But... it looks like Optonline may allow for relaying with authentication
(i.e., you user them as a "Smarthost").

Problems Sending E-Mail Using Optimum Online or Other ISP
http://www.bowerwebsolutions.com/support/sending_email_optonline.htm

If this is true you'll need to authenticate to their (mail.optoline.net)
server to send email.
------------------------
SMARTHOST AUTHENTICATION

In CEICW you told it to "Forward all email to the email server at your ISP"
(i.e., use the ISP as a Smarthost). Most ISPs require authentication to do
this. To configure authentication, go to:

Server Management | Advanced Management | First Organization (Exchange) |
Connectors | (right click) SmallBusiness SMTP Connector | Properties |
Advanced | Outbound Security | Basic Authentication | Modify.

and enter your authentication credentials. This is usually the primary
account username/password or an email account username/password that was set
up when you signed up with your ISP. Once you've done this, click OK three
times and your Smarthost authentication is done.
