Newbie Question

Hi,
I'm setting up a new installation of SBS 2003 for a group of bods out on the
road in different parts of the world who want to share diaries, contacts and
files. The server will sit in a hosting centre and the users will gain
access via a VPN - there will be no access from the LAN.
I'm going to use hardware for the VPN side of things. My concerns centre
around Exchange and it's security. I don't know a great deal about
Exchange - I've never wanted to - an the only places I've used it (Exch
2000) whatever I have done abuse.org always reports it as an open relay so
I've used a pop3 connector and pulled mail from an isps catchall account and
secured it that way - not exactly elegant but the kit is still running...
Can anyone give sound advice, hints, tips or pointers for this install and
also comment on the sharepoint part of it?
I've looked on the web and it seems that this sort of thing is not for the
faint hearted but we've all got to start somewhere :>)
.
