RE: Windows server 2003 SP1

Hi Scubak,

Thank you for posting in SBS newsgroup.

Since currently, the SBS server cannot boot up, I think we may need to
backup all the data offline. There are two ways for you to backup the data.
One is to install a parallel system such as Windows xp, or you could boot
the computer into recover console and backup the data. I would list the
steps to install a Windows XP at the end of this reply for your reference.

You can use the disaster recovery steps to perform the reinstallation. I
would like to suggest you refer to the following steps:

Backup:

1. By default, the Exchange database file is stored at c:\program
files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata\. You may need to save the .edb files and .stm files
to a folder on another disk partition or a shared folder on an internal
workstation.

2. Open Windows Explorer, backup C:\ Users Shared Folders.

3. If you are using the SBS 2003 built-in SharePoint site
(Companyweb), you may refer to the following KB article to move the
database file:

827701 How to perform a disaster recovery operation of SharePoint
Services

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=827701

4. Backup the other data.

Restore:

1. Insert SBS 2003 CD#1 into the CD driver. Boot the machine by using the
CD-Rom. Install SBS 2003 server. (Format original system drive)

2. Create new user accounts (duplicate the original accounts) by using Add
Users Wizard.

3. Open Services Console, stop ''Microsoft Exchange Information Store''
service. Open ''Exchange System Manager'', navigate to ''Servers''\<Server
Name>\''First Storage Group''. Right-click it and choose ''Properties''.
Select the database folder. (The original database files should be copied
to this folder).

4. Open Exchange System Manager. Navigate to ''Servers''\<Server
Name>\''First Storage Group''\''Mailbox Store''. Right-click it and choose
''Properteis''. Click ''Database'' tab and check ''This database can be
overwritten by a restore'' option. Also check this option for ''Public
folder store''.

5. Open Services console, start ''Microsoft Exchange Information Store''
service. In Exchange System Manager console, right-click ''Mailbox store''
and choose ''Mount Store''. Also mount the public folder store.

6. In Exchange System Manager console, expand ''Mailbox Store''.
Right-click ''Mailboxes'' folder and choose ''Run Cleanup Agent''. After
doing this, you will see the mailboxes with red crosses in the right panel.
Right-click each mailbox and choose ''Reconnect''. Connect the mailboxes to
the current user accounts.

7. Restore the contents in Users shared folders.

8. Follow the KB 827701 to restore the SharePoint site.

In addition, to perform a parallel installation of Windows XP on the same
partition, you need to either start the computer to the Recovery Console or
start the computer from a boot disk that allows you to gain access to the
partition so you can rename the Windows and Program Files folders.

Note: If you are using a FAT16 or a FAT32 file system, you can use a
Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Startup
disk to gain access to the partition. If you gain access to the partition,
proceed to step 4.

1. To gain access to the registry, start the computer in either Normal Mode
or Safe Mode.

2. Turn on the functionality of the "set" command in the Windows XP
Recovery Console. To do this:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.

b. In the Open box, type "regedt32" (without the quotation marks),
and then click OK.

c. Locate and then click the SetCommand value under the following
key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

d. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

e. In the "Value data" box, type "1" (without the quotation marks),
and then click OK.

NOTE: The default setting in the "Value data" box is 0.

3. Start the computer to the Windows XP Recovery Console, type the
following command, and then press ENTER:

" set AllowAllPaths = true " (without the quotation marks)

4. Type "<x>" (without the quotation marks) (where <x> is the drive letter
in which Windows is currently installed), and the press ENTER to change to
the appropriate drive.

5. Type "cd \" (without the quotation marks), and then press ENTER to
change to the root folder of the drive.

6. Rename the Windows folder, the Documents and Settings folder, and the
Program Files folder. To do this, type the following commands, and then
press ENTER after each command.

"rename windows winold" (without the quotation marks)

"ren docume~1 doc.old" (without the quotation marks)

"rename progra~1 progra~1.old" (without the quotation marks)

7. Start the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM, and then start Setup.
Windows is installed in the same partition, and the file system remains
intact.

After you determine that the current installation is the installation that
you want to leave intact, delete the remaining Win<xxx> folder and the
Prog<xxx> folder that are no longer being used. Your documents from the
prior installation will remain available in the mydocu~1.old folder.

Note: If you receive an "access denied" message when you try to view or
open files on an NTFS volume that were created in the old installation, you
must take ownership of the files in the new installation.

Hope the information helps. Thanks again!

Best regards,

Crina Li (MSFT)

| Hi,
|
| While i was installing SP1 for windows server 2003, the power fell down.
| Durintg booting now my server automatically reboots after the startup
logo. I
| tried several ways to restart the computer, used safe mode, repair mode,
but
| nothing works.
|
| I did check my harddisks and they are ok. It's possible to have access to
| the drives.
| Using different tools it's possiblke to have access to my files and
possible
| to copy them to a memmorystick, but my biggest problem is how to get to
my
| e-mail (exchange)
|
| How can i fix this problem so i have access to exchange and export files
to
| a new server (the old server became to small) or how to move exchange
| database file to a new server and use them there (the new server is in
Dutch
| the old server was English)
