Re: Recommendation for USB 2.0 PCI card for PowerEdge 2600?

I've only installed one SBS server and it was on a Dell 2600 last summer. I
was totally shocked to realize the server didn't have USB 2.0 built in. Went
to CompUSA and bought an Adaptec combo Firewire/USB 2.0 card for use with
the external hard drives we were using for backups (which had both
connections). I've always recommended using good, name-brand cards in
servers. Spent $80+tax for the card thinking it was cheaper to pay upfront
than mess with problems from a cheap card. Well, had problems with the
Adaptec card in that Windows would hang every time during shutdown when an
external drive was connected via Firewire on the card. Can't remember off
hand if we had problems with the USB part of the card too, but figured it
wasn't worth spending extra for if half of it didn't work.

Anyway, we ended up returning the Adaptec card and buying the cheapest
generic USB 2.0-only card card we could find at Fry's for $7 and it's worked
perfect with no problems. So, I guess it doesn't always pay to spend extra
for the name brand anymore.
