Hi John,
I'm also working with Brian on the same issue. We've tried the following suggestions yet:
Method 1. Create a static WINS entry for companyweb
To create the static WINS entry for companyweb, follow these steps:
1. On the SBS computer, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click WINS.
2. Under <servername>, right-click Active Registrations, and then click New Static Mapping.
3. In the "Computer name" box, type "companyweb" (without quotes).
4. In the "IP address" box, type the IP address of the SBS computer's internal network adapter, and then click OK.
Method 2. Manually create a VPN connection on the client computer, and then manually enter the SBS 2003 DNS Suffix information.
To create the VPN connection on a Windows XP computer, follow these steps:
1. On the client computer, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
2. Double-click the Make New Connection icon.
3. On the first page of the Network Connection Wizard, click Next.
4. Click "Connect to a private network through the Internet," and then click Next.
5. If the computer uses an always-on broadband connection, click "Do not dial the initial connection." If the computer uses a dial-up or PPPoE
connection, click "Automatically dial this initial connection," and then select the desired Internet connection. Click Next after you select the
appropriate option.
6. In the "Host name or IP address" box, type the host name or IP address that you use to connect to the SBS computer from the Internet, and
then click Next.
7. Click "For all users" or "Only for myself," and then click Next.
8. Type a name for the connection, and then click Finish to complete the wizard. The Connect box will open.
9. In the Connect box, click Properties.
10. Click the Networking tab.
11. Click to select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
12. Click Advanced.
13. Click the DNS tab.
14. In the "DNS suffix for this connection box," type the internal domain name of the SBS computer. For example, type "MyDomain.local" (without
quotes).
15. Click OK three times to close the connection properties.
16. Type the username and password that you use on the SBS network, click "Save Password" if you want to save the password, and then click
Connect.
Method 3. On each Windows 2000 client computer using the connection manager, add an entry for companyweb to the hosts file.
To create the companyweb entry in the hosts file, follow these steps:
1. On the Windows 2000 Pro computer, click Start, click Run, type "%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc" (without quotes), and then click OK.
2. In the etc folder, right-click the hosts file, and then click Open With.
3. Click to select Notepad, and then click OK.
4. On the line below the "127.0.0.1 localhost" entry, type the IP address of the SBS computer's internal network adapter, press the Tab key, and
then type "companyweb" (without quotes).
5. Press Ctr+S, and then close Notepad.
[Note] We're still trying to make sure that the VPN and the LAN are on different subnets.
Please also go ahead to test the suggestions.
I look forward to your update.
