I try to do this with a cmd script
net use M: \\server\share /persistent:no

The first thing it tries to do is use the credentials i used to login, when
it fails, it asks me to enter an account name or press "Enter" to use the
credentials of domain\username. This fails.

If I use a different user's account i am able to login, but i don't want to
do that. I want to be able to logon with the correct account.

I tried the cookies thing and it didn't work.
I would like to stress that i am using Symantec VPN client software because
the VPN server (if that is the right term) is a Gateway device.

I didn't understand suggestion #3.
