email address for notifications

We are not using exchange server on SBS 2003 for various reasons, the users
are pulling their email directly from the external pop3 server. But my user
who is to receive tape change notifications is currently configured as
username@sbsdomain.local. Can I just change that to her external pop3
address? Does SBS send emails without Exchange configured and running?

Thanks for clarification on this.
