Just had a thought on what I want, that is to put a pc back as a member of a
workgroup eg "mshome or workgroup" rather than belonging to a domain without
losing the windows xp pc's settings & mail in outlook.

When I 1st added the pc's to the domain the email those pc's had were
imported into outlook no problem.
