I don't think there can be a "best practice" that fits all.
I recommend you look at each update individually and decide for yourself
what is best.
- When I build a new machine, I always install the latest OEM drivers.
HP/Compaq makes this especially easy to do, providing a utility for machine
analysis and Softpaqs for update packages.
- After that, you can either continue to use OEM updates or use Windows
Update. Read the details about the driver, often post-installation updates
actually are written by the manufacturer, not Microsoft although it's being
pushed by a Microsoft tool.
Personally, I tend to install most latest updates... but there <are> some
things I shy away from like drive controller and BIOS flash updates. Flash
updates always involve considerable risk with a significant chance of leaving
the machine inoperable for days and weeks.
