I think that's the question that nobody is in a position to answer. And
that fact in itself is why you're getting the advice you are. People are
looking to minimise the chances of compatibility problems.

What do you have at the client end? If you have the same model Cisco
router at both ends, use them for the VPN. If you have different models,
probably still use them. If you're using XP for the client end of the
VPN, terminate it on SBS. Don't ask for trouble.

VPN is still a very proprietary technology. For that to change means
manufacturers risking loss of revenue by making their equipment
compatible with that of other manufacturers. While they pay lip service
to the principles of compatibility and standards, they all have an
interest in maintaining exactly the kind of uncertainty that currently
exists.
