I don't think the existance of a KB article on "X" implies that "X" is a
supported or recommanded configuration. Support articles are for things
that DON'T work out-of-the-box.
What price do you put on your time?
How much more time are you prepared to put into making your USB modem work?
Have you considered e.g. a Netgear DG834G (
http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=NGEDG834G
for £69.31 inc. VAT) which I'm sure won't break the bank.
For what it's worth, all the SBS2003 sites I manage have an Alcatel USB
modem locked safely away in a cupboard, and a router/modem doing the DSL
connection to the SBS server. Read into this what you will...
