I think that I have found out what my bandwidth problem was.

The client printers(x20) are all set up for sharing and to list in the
directory, by default thought that it might be a nice option.

These printers have been broadcasting their drivers to all workstations
every 2 minutes, installing, updating, updating, updating.....

On the LAN the printers aren't installed unless one does so manually,
selecting a printer from the directory. For some odd reason the AD installed
all available printers on the WAN clients and updated the drivers on each of
them every two minutes. No wonder it took them 5 minutes to read an email.

I took all printers out of the directory, leaving them as shares, and
performance is almost back to normal.
