OWA over SBS 2003.local

I just finished my installation of SBS 2003 for a client and now can't get
OWA to work properly from the outside web.

>From the internal network, I can successfully get onto OWA by going to
https://server1.mydomain.local/exchange. Since I have a public DNS
redirecting mail.mydomain.com to this IP address, I'd like to be able to get
to it from https://mail.mydomain.com/exchange. When I go to that page from
an external location, the login screen just keeps refreshing when I try to
log in.

Any clues as to how to solve this problem? Is this virtual server related?
Is it because the local domain is named .local?

(When I ran the Internet connection wizard, I created a local certificate as
if the server were named mail.mydomain.com. I don't think that's the
problem.)

Many thanks,
Rob
