Craig,

It sounds like you have done correct steps, but obviously something is
missing there, right? :)

I'm wondering if you have both servers set with DNS references pointing to
self and opposite server?

You also need to make the new DC a Global Catalog server.

I also don't follow the comment you make about the logon the users's
profiles. I'm not clear if you are also doing redirected folders for
profiles or what, but you will have some major complications with this
process if you don't address any Group Policies and offline folder caching
design issues as well.
