Hi Nick,
I understand the issue to be as follows:
After you remove the smart card from the client computer and leave it for
hours, it hangs and you have to reboot the computer. If I'm out of base,
please feel free to let me know.
Based on your description, it seems to be a pure client issue. Will you
please answer a few questions before troubleshoot this issue?
1. Did the issue happen on all clients?
2. What is the OS of the clients?
3. If you use classic logon instead of the Smart Card logon, will the issue
be reproduced?
Suggestion 1. Power Options.
1. Open Control Panel and open Power Options.
2. Change the Power schemes to "Always On" (You can also prevent the system
from going to standby or hibernate manually).
3. Test the issue again.
Suggestion 2. Clean Boot.
1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
4. Click OK and choose Restart
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

[Note] Please make sure that all drivers are compatible with the client
computer.
Have a nice day!
