Alan,
By default on SBS 2003 the MSExchangeMTA service is disabled. Check out the
following article which describes the default settings for the services on
SBS 2003..

Having the MTA disabled shouldn't be an issue unless you have a connector
for Exchange that may need it.. for example, 3rd party fax product, 3rd
party email server, etc.
