if this is a new install I'd flatten it and use .local (actually more likely
.lan) for the AD DNS name. Using your FQDN is unnecessary and in most cases
undesirable. You supply your FQDN to the system when you run the 'Connect to
the internet' wizard, this configures Exchange to handle the domain.

You suggest the ADSL device is 'modem/router', you are using it in bridged
mode and running native PPPoE software on the server. If you can, switch the
device to routed mode. If it's not in fact a combined modem/router do
yourself a favour and buy a simple NAT router to run the connection to ADSL.

This http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=50 is the
configuration I suggest. With maybe the combined functions of router and
modem being supplied by the ADSL device.

SBS Standard or Premium?
I can't actually see why you're having the pop issue, maybe the external NIC
failing to get an IP is involved.
Have you run the 'Connect to the internet' wizard? If not, have you
completed the rest of the 'To-Do list'?
