Hello David,

Congrats on looking for alternatives to VPNs. Considering the risks involved
in deploying and the work involved in maintaining security integrity if you
permit VPNs, alternatives should be considered.

Mail:
Many choices, although some choices are more secure than others, they're all
based on common methods so functionality and ease are probably your main
deciders...

RPC/HTTP
OWA
IMAP
POP
RPC

File:
Many alternatives. Personally I highly recommend methods that use a
webserver as the Application Gateway to secured resources as the best
approach, and the webserver can further be protected by firewalls like ISA.
Examples of this approach include Internet facing Intranet Portals like
Companyweb and regular websites implementing Web Shares. Hybrid solutions
which are also based on an Application Gateway include OWA Public Folders.

If you support a mobile workforce using PDAs, I still recommend the methods
already described but you can also use ActiveSync.

HTH,
Tony Su
