I thought it should but it doesn't. I have looked at the headers and Jo is
definately getting email addressed to john, jonathan, joan etc etc. It is
like the routing rule is picking up the JO out of all the addresses. John
doesn't get joans or jonathans though etc etc. This happens even when the
email is only addressed to john, joan etc. It also happens if the email has
multiple recipients in the to: line and she gets the email even if the john,
joan is located at a different domain.

I'm lost with it, but I'm sure it's the routing rules. What is the best way
of defining the rules?
