I've been using two alternating external USB drives at one non-profit site
for about 6 months. They went from SBS 4.5 with a DDS tape system to
SBS2003 with external USB drives. Other than getting used to the new
hardware, the client has accepted the change well and the backups have been
smooth. This site is actually running two separate SBS2K3 servers with
alternating USB hard drives for each network. The servers have 36GB SCSI
drives with about 15 GB of data/apps to back up nightly. I used Bytecc
enclosures with 200GB IDE. The boxes that shipped with the enclosures were
converted to carrying cases but I'm thinking about looking for
metal/foam-lined cases to provide a better measure of safety when these are
transported offsite.

Final cost was about $175 each for the external drives. I suspect a good
metal case would run another $50. A couple of things that remain to be seen
are how well the external case On/Off switch holds up and whether the daily
plugging/unplugging of the cable will result in any failure of the USB
connector.

For the low end market, it's been hard to justify a tape system that costs
almost as much as the server. :(
