I have attempted to install SBS 2003 this weekend on a brand new dell server.
I used the dell open assist manager to perform the installation. The old
network was running Novell with tcp/ip installed for internet. I copied all
the data from the old server onto a pc. After, I took the novell server down
and began installing the server. Here is step by step what happened.
1. Installed SBS 2003 on a brand new Dell server using the dell open assist
cd rom
2. Network is on a Novell ipx/spx network with ip for internet connection.
The ip addresses use 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
3. After installing sbs, I tried to ping the router (ad tran router) with no
luck. I did all the tests to verify the nic is working(loop test, ping
itself) and they were successful.
4. Only after configuring RRA(Routing and Remote Access) for lan routing,
was I able to ping everything. I shouldn't need RRA but this was the only
thing I could think of to do.
5. After configuring RRA, I was able to ping websites from the server but
was not able to get on the internet via IE
6. After configuring RRA, I was able to ping from the workstations to the
server by ip and name, however, when trying to join the domain, it would
timeout after about 2mins and give me the message “ The Network name is no
longer valid”
7. I took the firewall offline and tested to see if there was a conflict,
however, I was getting the same thing.
8. The owner bought a new switch and we tried that with no luck.
The Dell server is a Dell 700, 2.8ghz, 1gb ddr, 1 Nic.
Any advice you guys can give will be much appreciated as I'm stuck on this
one now.
Ryan
