MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit. It defines the largest packet
that a network device can handle before it breaks it up into smaller
packets.
We have seen the event and symptoms you report with a Linksys router and
applying a firmware update (which included a fix for an MTU bug) to it
resolved the issue. I would suggest trying the firmware update for your 3
com router.
If you wanted to be sure it was your 3com router, you could briefly connect
your server directly to the ADSL modem and wait for the pop3 schedule to
run.
