Hi Henry:

Ok, I guess I wasn't clear.

I am not running Microsoft exchange. I have installed the SMTP service and
the POP3 service for email. I have controls applications that need access to
SMTP services so that when errors occur, they can send emails. This is
working fine.

The only people that will be collecting emails form the POP3 server are
BEHIND the firewall, so port 110 remains closed to/from the internet.

My problem is that POP3 is not fetching the email from the SMTP server's
drop directory. I can see the email arriving when I send test messages so the
issue has nothing to do with DNS, addressing or port forwarding. If I click
on the *.eml files, the emails are there...its just that POP3 is not picking
them up.

This could have something to do with the fact that I did NOT use the default
SMTP virtual server as I made some mistakes in setting it up and there
appears no way to fix those mistakes. So I have turned that virtual server
off, its stopped, and setup another virtual server using the same drop box as
the default and turned it on. Its working fine, sending and receiving mail.

The POP3 service is configured to pick mail up from the same domain as the
SMTP server's. My direcotry structure is:
C:\>tree Inetpub
Folder PATH listing
Volume serial number is 0006EE50 6031:5FDE
C:\INETPUB
+---AdminScripts
+---mailroot
    +---Badmail
    +---Drop
    +---Drop2
    +---Mailbox
    ¦ +---rtknet.gov.my
    ¦ +---P3_admin.mbx
    +---Pickup
    +---Queue
    +---Route
    +---SortTemp

My drop box for the SMTP server is the drop directory. This is working,
emails can be sent out of the system from any client(outlook express in this
case) behind the firewall, and emails are received and show up in this
direcotry.

POP3's mailbox directory is 'mailbox' with a single mailbox setup under
rtknet.gov.my. I am using local accounts to do this with a single account
'admin' setup. The domain on the SMTP server and the POP3 server is
rtknet.gov.my. Here is the DNS listing:
F:\>nslookup
Default Server: sps-ap-dc-01.ap.trimblecorp.net
Address: 10.3.36.10

> set type=MX
> rtknet.gov.my
Server: sps-ap-dc-01.ap.trimblecorp.net
Address: 10.3.36.10

Non-authoritative answer:
rtknet.gov.my MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.rtknet.gov.my

mail.rtknet.gov.my internet address = 202.75.44.154
>

This looks ok to me and like I have already mentioned, SMTP appears to be
working fine.
I have also setup an alias in the SMTP server for mail.rtknet.gov.my incase
this was causing the problem....it wasn't cause I still have the problem.

POP3 simply does not pick the email up form the drop directory and place it
in admin's mailbox.

How do I trouble shoot this?
How do I fix this?

Cheers,
john
