Apparently this is not specific to OL2003, but I agree it isn't well
publicized. The SBS CAL allows you to downgrade to OL2002 or a prior
version, but the media is not included.

Can I use an earlier version of Outlook in place of Outlook 2003, which
comes with Windows Small Business Server 2003?
A. Yes, you can use any earlier version of Outlook instead of Outlook 2003.
A Windows Small Business Server 2003 CAL entitles each user or device to use
Outlook 2003 or any previous version.

Versions of Word/OL must match to use Wordmail as email editor - not a new
problem

If you plan to install Microsoft Office 2003, whether to upgrade to Outlook
2003 with or after an Office 2003 deployment. If users upgrade to Outlook
2003 before upgrading to other Office applications, they will not be able to
use Microsoft WordMail as their e-mail editor. The version of Microsoft Word
must match the version of Outlook in order for WordMail to be available as
the editor in Outlook.

Disadvantages to installing before Office
Installing Outlook before you install the rest of Office has several
disadvantages:

a.. When you deploy the other Office applications later on, you must
customize the installation process in order to preserve your original
Outlook settings.
b.. You cannot use the WordMail editor in Outlook 2003 until Word 2003 has
also been installed.
c.. If you use separate administrative installation points for Outlook and
Office, you must also allow for more hard disk space, because the files
common to all of Office are duplicated on the server.
d.. If you use the same administrative installation point for Outlook and
Office, you must take extra steps to manage multiple versions of the Setup
files or to modify installation options.
