Hi everyone,
I volunteered to set up a new system a friend has purchased for his company.
It includes a server running Windows 2003 SBS and 3 clients running Windows
XP Pro. The software came pre-installed by Dell.
At present I'm just trying to get one client working!
I've set up the client with the \server\connectcomputer (or whatever it
said!) and it all went through ok.
The client can access the shared folder on the server that it requires for
the company accounts.
Now I'm trying to get Internet access sorted out and it is driving me
insane!!
The intention is to have the server connect directly to the Internet and
dish out the web to the clients on demand. With a peer to peer network it
was easy just to run "Set up a home or office network".
The ADSL connection is supplied by British Telecom through a crappy USB
modem and requires a username / password log-in.
I can connect to the 'net via the server and I have run the "Set up
Internet" on the server but I don't know what if anything I have to do on
the client computer to get it running.
At present, all that happens when opening IE from a client is the Intranet
home page appears, then when you try to go somewhere such as Google, IE
brings up an error after a long wait!
I'm afraid I don't understand DCHP and DNS. I see ISA and Share Points
mentioned but these also mean very little to me. The SBS software is the
basic version.
I wondered if it could be the BT Broadband connection and whether I'd be
better to buy a seperate router?
To give temporary 'net access, I've connected the USB modem to the client
but even this doesn't work properly as everything is very SLOW! It looks as
if the client is passing everything back through the server perhaps?
I cannot understand why it all has to be so complicated - all they want is a
shared Internet connection and accounts data stored on a file server
(stipulated by the software provider).
Please help me!
Thanks in advance...
David
