Tester,
Again with a USB HDD backup solution you want to be sure in advance that you
backup software supports it. Secondly you will have to determine if the by
supporting it they mean full disaster recovery.. In general HDD backup do
not support boot to restore and as such add to the time it takes to recover
since the OS has to be reinstalled. With SBS 2003 you cannot format drives
fat32 and so you cannot even get access to the drives unless you have an
NTFS OS installed.
Other things to look out for with HDD / USB 2.0 backup solutions. USB 2.0 is
not commonly available on legacy servers, I don't think Dell is even
shipping yet with USB2.0 on their servers but if they are it is very recent.
Most server are the same way. You will have to find a USB card that is on
the HCL(useful tool that that is). Again this can be an issue as disaster
recovery often requires the option to boot to the device. You will have to
check your bios to see that it supports booting to USB.
I recommend that you place value on your time since you will spend a lot of
time testing you backup plan. Using a USB/HDD backup solution may be
possible but will definitely give you headaches if you try to go this route.
I have a fair bit of experience testing backup plans and HDD systems created
big headaches and recovery situation often lead to rebuilding the server
even though you do have the data to do it with.
I hope this information is useful to you.
Regards,
Jeff Loucks
