I'm also using a USB 2.x PCI card.
But backup seems to complete in a reasonable time, there are no related DNS
errors or obvious timeouts in the logs, and the USB drive hasn't been
detached from the server for quite a while. There still might be a USB
issue, but it doesn't quite sound the same as yours.
