for four users, the potential losses in support and just plain 'stuffin
around' I'd be wondering whether a domain migration (MS or otherwise) is
worth it.
Do us a favour and outsource that website.
With more users I'd probably throw VMWare/VPC trial onto a ws and run up
standard W2K as a DC in the existing domain, sync the AD, copy the VM and
remove one copy from the domain then toss it, returning the existing domain
to near 'as-is' condition and now having a copy in virtual hardware.
The copy in virtual space should never again attempt to talk to the original
SBS which would be forcibly removed from AD and the VM then assumes or
forcefully seizes the FSMO roles + GC. This is not a clean process, there
will be remnants of the original SBS in AD, someone who knows AD better than
I may be able to clean it up, I keep getting a few weeks down the track and
finding 'OHHH, and now _this_ is referring to the old server, how do we fix
that?'. Active directory would be 2003 extended and then SBS2003 installed
on the old hardware, after ensuring everything on it is backed up, of
course. The SBS2k3 install can be stopped after just the OS stage and enter
an existing domain but this is not MS supported. I'm unsure of MS's stance
on installing W2KS onto the old hardware, making it effective 'root of the
forest' and then upgrading your root DC to SBS2k3, possibly making it your
only DC by removing the VM gracefully first, which if it was clean (ie. no
VM's and no forceful seizure of roles etc) would be a supported scenario.
Pity you're not getting new hardware. An MS domain move to new hardware
would be easy comparatively.
