It's actually a DDS4 20/40GB.
(Dell 20/40 GB PowerVault 100T DDS-4 Tape Drive )
Ok, I will try again using NTBACKUP and post my results.
I'll look forward to receiving the work-around from you. Until then, I'll hold my client off from purchasing another product.
Thanks Cris,
Adam

First Cris, I want to thank you for responding so quickly. For the first time I actually feel like I at least know where I stand. If there is a work around that will eventually work, great. If not, then at least you helped me to decide on the next step!
So, my understanding is that you think there is too much data or that one of the data shares is corrupt?
No I don't think you have a corrupt share...I think it may be too much data...this is a travan tape drive right??? 20GB/40GB (mind you though compression never works) How big is your drive??
Assuming that one of the two solutions below works, is that the work-around you were going to suggest? Is there a way to get the SBS 2003 Backup to work?
I'm going to try to find you the email I have and post the work around I was given to see if it works for you...will try to do that this weekend
In regard to selecting one data share at a time, I know you cannot do that from the wizard b/c the wizard will prevent you from excluding almost all of the directories. You can do it from the ntbackup utility, but then the reporting feature of SBS does not work (I tried that too and it failed).
I was suggesting you try it from NTbackup because thats all the SBSBackup is with a few extra scripts, bells and whistles. If you can backup just a small amount then we know that the tape drive, driver, and tapes seem to be ok. Its a process of elimination
Anyway, unless you know of a good work-around, it sounds like the best alternative is to install a 3rd Party Backup program?

Guess my approach from this would be:
1. Create a new backup job
2. Select one of the data shares and the Information Store
3. Run the backup Does it fail?
4. If no, and another data share and keep testing
5. If yes, consider a trial download of ultrabac or some other backup program and see if that works correctly.

I tried it both ways.

Are you using the SBS wizard or regular NTBackup??

In regard to Shadow Copy, I disabled it figuring that it may free up some space, which it did. However, the backup still will not complete successfully! Should disabling Shadow Copy have resolved the problem?
Any help and/or guidance you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated as I feel very uncomfortable knowing that my customer's data has not been appropriately backed up in over a week.
Thank you very much,

This is probably the single biggest ongoing issue with SBS right now
All I can tell you at this point is that the SBS Dev Group, Product Support, etc are aware of the issue and looking at what they can do to resolve it
The basic issue has to do with Shadow Copy, which in and of itself is a good thing, because its gives users the ability to restore docs they may have deleted from the server etc. But this is basically what is causing the problem.
I have an email at home that with a possible workaround that I will try to post here later this weekend that I hope will help you

Has anyone been battling with the SBS 2003 Server Backup Utility? One of my
clients has been running SBS 2003 for almost a year and the backups have
been running 90% successfully up till about a week ago. Since that point, I
have not been able to get a single backup to succeed. The error I get after
the backup runs for about 2-3 hours is:
The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted.
The operation was ended.
Backup completed on 9/10/2004 at 1:32 AM.
I have installed the Hotfix referenced in the MS Knowledge Base Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=831664&product=sbserv2003
. . . but to no avail.
I even sat down with all the users and had them archive any data they didn't
need backed up regularly, in order to free up space since the above article
mentioned that this could be a problem if you are close to the end of your
media.
If anyone knows of a solution aside from installing Veritas, please let me
know - Thanks.
