Thanks for your long and detailed explanation, I have read through it in its
entirety. I've also read through Cris's briefer but also useful answer.

1. The LaCie drive is a more than adequate backup device but the idiots in
France who shipped out the advance replacement shipped out a firewire only
drive rather than a firewire/USB 2.0 drive, and in my case they may as well
have shipped out half a house brick!

2. I have a dozen PCs and twenty users, and I also have a 10 day window
where the users are away. I'm going to do it manually - remove all the PCs
from the domain, re-instate them and set the users up with new passwords.
(if there is an easy way around this that I have missed in my tired-ness
then please let me know).

To be honest I cannot believe that MS do not have a simple tool in place to
do exactly what I'm asking. I can't be the first, and I guarantee I won't be
the last person who wants to do this.

I do appreciate your attempt to point me in the right direction though.
