thanks for all of your suggestions - I have ticked the SQL back up box in
backup exec and the back up ran over the weekend. I can now see the MSDE
database - this is a hard lesson to learn - even though the entire c drive
is backed up, the SQL databases do not get backed up unless you select the
SQL option. It was quite enlightening to find that the excel spreadsheets
are contained within a dbase - I assumed that they would be part of the web
site somewhere off the inetpub directory. Unfortunately the user has lost a
months worth of work - it obviously could have been a lot worse.

thanks again

jenny

Hi JD,

Those are stored in the MSDE database. Do you have a backup?

Try this from
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en-us/stsf19.mspx:

If you have a recent backup of either the content database or the site, you
can restore the backup to a new, temporary server or site, and then copy the
deleted item, document, or list to the original site. After you have
recovered the list, item, or document, you can delete the restored version
of the database or site. For more information, see Backing Up and Restoring
Databases and Backing Up and Restoring Web Sites.
