Parl,
Interesting concept that has been discussed many times since 1999. I have
some really good advice for you.
Asprin... buy it in wholesale qantities... it is cheaper. Since we were on
the topic of cheaper. Of course it is always cheaper and also preferable not
to need Asprin in the first place.
More seriously though, have you ever done a TCO costing on Linux? How about
extensibility. So you pigeon hole a customer into a Linux linup of Apps and
the compettiton gets I consultant that has done the math and says "long run
Windows is not only cheaper but will serve you future needs better". Your
client grows a little and learns a little more about the technology. So does
their competition. They both identitfy a strategic advantage by using
technology to improve their business. The XP network finds an available
solution (actually finds a couple of different flavors) right away and
implements it within a month. They gain leadership in the industry by being
invoative. Six months later the other company has been able to find a
solution that works with one of the flavors of linux that had not been
installed. Your migrate them to the new OS because it is free. The cost to
migrate is only your service. Nine months go by but you get a solution in
there for "free"(no software licensing). Your fees cost your client more
than the orginal OS cost the competition. Lost leadership cost your client
the ability to maintain credibility in the market. They go under 7 months
later and never pay your bill for services because you saved them money.
If you do the math, save your client money. Charge your client fair prices
for good products. It is good business for everyone.
Cheers,
Jeff Loucks
