Technically actually you're mistaken. It's physical sector zero of a HD and
it's name is the master boot record aka MBR in MS land and that
record/sector contains the partition table and the initial boot code.
I wanted to include a citation and the first four places Google supplied

The exception to that might be if the missing drive is in fact just a single
logical/extended drive and not a primary partition. Then things get more
complicated but a good partition recovery program may still be able to
handle it.
