Another admin removed the MSDE instance of sharepoint from the server
yesterday and I've been trying to recover it. I had upgraded the instance
to SQL and it was running fine. I set up a backup of the configuration and
content databases using the SQL backup tools so I have recent backups. In
an attempt to recover, I tried to re-install the Intranet component but that
didn't replace the MSSQL$Sharepoint service instance. I had to remove the
Intranet component and then re-install it.

I'm not SQL/MSDE expert so I may have the process wrong but now I don't seem
to be able to recover the databases. If I restore the databases from
Enterprise manager, I am not able to connect to them from Sharepoint Central
Admin -- there are no databases listed in manage content databases. If I
try to create a new database from Central Admin, it says one already exists.

How can I recover the databases?

Thanks.
