You can do this, but is not recommended to be done on the
same machine because you cannot granularly control lookups
by zone and most people will not want their LAN info
publicly accessible.
So, you would want to maintain DNS on your SBServer for
your Windows Domain but will want to Server Publish DNS
machine(s) for your Public Domain (you need to register 2
public IP addresses to be a Publicly Registered DNS).
Dennis, more people like yourself should consider
maintaining their own DNS if you want to enjoy the
following benefits:
- Support for creating publicly accessible subdomains (I
don't know of any public DNS services which support this)
- Ability to modify/add records in a few seconds, all
services I know of require at least a few hours before the
changes are effective. This can be a big time waster if
you develop and need publicly resolvable names for short
periods of time.
As for redundancy, reliability, etc. - I look at it this
way. If you're maintaining records for others, this would
be an issue, but if you're maintaining records only for
your SBServer's Public Domain, if your Domain is
inaccessible it's probably for reasons more serious (ie.
SBServer down) and won't make any diff -- There's no point
for Name Resolution to be resolvable but your Server is
inaccessible.
