Thanks to all for replying,
I spent the past few days sorting out my windows 2000 to 2003 upgrade to so
sorry for the late reply.
I called MS product support and when I got thru to a real person they sent
me the hotfix immediately. I was quite impressed!! When I asked the tech for
the update he kept saying update or ???? to which the answer is hotfix, he
then emailed the hotfix. Don't be afraid of all the prerecorded messages
about needing a credit card or if it is a hotfix issue receiving a refund to
a charge, or the online submission refering you to a vendors site.
below is an update of my windows 2000 to 2003 upgrade drama. If I had to do
it all again I would definately try to migrate to another box, format
install sbs20003 on the server then migrate all the data back to server for
a clean window 2003 sbs install
Problem
setup couldn't prepare active directory and prompted me to run adprep
/domainprep from the cmd line, run it from the cmd line and still no joy,
viewed adrep log file and found it did run unsuccessful, searched articles
with lots of references to group policy causing issues but wasn't case.
found the following fix as I had a missing sysvol reference in the registry
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
Value Name: Sysvol
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: <path to sysvol> i.e. C:\winnt\sysvol\sysvol
Please add that value if it is not there, reboot the system, and then check
if the problem has been resolved.
The next problem was setup telling me that I was not a member of domain
admins, enterprise admin and schema admins. I checked the account (built in
administrator) and it was a member of all the group. I took all the groups
out and then put them back reset and it work but I had to keep doing this
almost at every logon.
Beyond that I had exchange issues with mdac version and used the following
to fix
"
Setup failed while installing sub-component Base DAV protocol with error
code 0xC103798A (see the installation logs for a detailed description). You
may cancel the installation or try the failed step again.")
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838176&Product=exch2003
next problem was connecting w98 box ( i wish i could get rid 98 but its not
going to happen any time soon)
I made changes to the default domain controllers policy
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555038
but still no logon
needed further registry changes
hk\lm\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa
changed "no lmhash" to 0
change lmcompatabiltylevel to 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;820281&Product=exch2003
at this time I got the adc client from MS the window 98 box could connect
without once the above change was made.
Now I'm sorting probs with routing and remote access, server printing,
backup exec, outlook web access, access but thats another story
