Hi Denise. I can't comment on your SBS SP upgrade, but in terms of the
Symantec upgrade I think using the upgrade would be your best choice.
There are a number of documents on the Symantec site (link below) which
explain the upgrade process. Unfortunately there are a few confusing areas
in the main upgrade document which Symantec said they will re-release
shortly. But in short, if you uninstall the software and install V9.0
fresh, you will loose all your configured settings. The correct method in
brief is:
Uninstall :
Symantec System Center (reset needed)
Symantec Quarantine Console Snap-in (reset needed)
Symantec Quarantine (reset needed)
Symantec AMS2 Server (reset needed)
Install :
New Symantec System Center (this should also install AMS2 and some other
bits)
Using Symantec System Centre:
Select Primary Server, click tools menu and select AV Server Rollout -
you should get an option to install fresh or upgrade, select upgrade.
Install :
Install New Quarantine
Install New Quarantine Console Snap-In
Using Symantec System Centre:
Select Tools Menu and then NT Client Install. Select all your clients
and they will be updated.
[At various points in the above process you will have to reset your server,
in particular after the removal of each individual V8 component, and after
some of the V9 has been installed]
At this point you probably want to re-configure Symantec Quarantine and AMS2
if needed. I believe from the main package only the Quarantine serve and
AMS2 loose their settings. There are quite a new options in V9.0 which you
may also want to start looking at, in particular Client and Server
Auto-Protect Options.
Finally, there is also a problem with certain versions of Outlook and the
new V9.0 Symantec Client. It caused because Outlook caches a particular
file used by the Symantec Client which gets changed after the update.
Subsequently in certain circumstances when opening an email in Outlook it
will complain about not being able to find Symantec Scanner. Symantec has
released a patch, and all it does is delete the outlook cache file so that
it is recreated on the next execution and resolves the problem. The patch
link and explanation is below :
